During the day, the feral duo were seldom seen. They stayed far away from the Pink Feet – and any other feet that traipsed through the property.

‘We can’t let them get too close,’ the Wild Child warned her wee son. ‘We don’t know how safe they are – or what intentions they have.’

They often heard the Pink Feet calling out in the garden with their weird ‘psssswsssswssss’ noise – which they eventually realised was the human way of being friendly and calling cats.

‘I wonder where they got that from?’ the wee boy asked his mother. ‘Sounds like they are hissing at us!’

‘Not such a friendly sound at all,’ agreed his mother.

Most of the time they stayed well-hidden in the bush outside the property wall. However, as they became more accustomed to the Pink Feet, they began peeping out from under the giant bouganvillia outside the gate. A good place to watch from as no human would brave the thorns to try to get close. They could watch the comings and goings from a place of safety and decide when to trundle up the driveway to the back courtyard to get their dinner- which was served in a plate that was put into a plate of water to prevent ants from swarming the food before they got to it. Their timing was not always that accurate – and they would not go near the food if the Pink Feet were too close.

The plated plates would sit waiting. The cats would watch – well-hidden in the undergrowth – and wait. As soon as they were sure the coast was clear and they felt safe enough they would dash for their dinner – they were always hungry enough! They’d gulp down the dinner and rush away again into their well-protected hiding place in the bush.
